The Sanctuary of the Sorrowful Mother of God offers a complete and systematic interpretation of the relationship between the Polish nation and the history of Christianity, and its best example is the Golgotha of Poland. In contrast to typical Golgothas describing the death and the passion of Christ, the Golgotha in Kałków represents the 20th century passion of Polish nation.

The official site of the sanctuary reads: “The newest history of Poland was portrayed inside the Golgotha, framed in paintings, events, the history of suffering, struggle and death, the history of Polish soul (...) the martyrdom of Polish nation is seen through the mystery of salvation. The passion of Christ and Poland become one.” The aim of the research therefore will be to analyse that interrelation and the way that pilgrims visiting the sanctuary perceive it.
